Disruptive

Patrick Rhone:

Yesterdays news came as a big surprise to most if not all of us. Patrick Rhone summarizes it like this:

The iPad is causing such disruption in the PC business that HP, a company fundamental to the creation of the personal computer itself, is getting out of the PC business.

Who would have thought that would happen? Patrick also gives some solid advice:

Just like the iPad created a whole option, and thus, new market (the one you keep calling the “tablet market”), the only way to compete is not to get into that market but to create a whole new one. One that will suck the life out of the iPad market. Something so disruptive, so mind blowing, so magical that, like the iPad, people will form lines around the block for months to get it.

It’s a great post. You should read the whole thing.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint

Jon Rubenstein:

We still have work to do to make webOS the platform we know it can be, but remember…..it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

In that spirit, Richard Kerris, head of worldwide developer relations for webOS, reminded me yesterday of the first reviews for a product introduced a little over ten years ago:

“…overall the software is sluggish” “…there are no quality apps to use, so it won’t last” “…it’s just not making sense….”

It’s hard to believe these statements described MacOS X - a platform that would go on to change the landscape of Silicon Valley in ways that no one could have imagined.

The similarities to our situation are obvious, but there’s also a big difference. Like David Pogue, our audiences get that webOS has the potential for greatness. And like me, they know that your hard work and passion, and the power of HP’s commitment to webOS, will turn that potential into the real thing.

I for one am cheering them on. I would love for WebOS to succeed and am seriously considering developing apps for WebOS if only they sold them in The Netherlands.

Coda for iPad

Stylish iPad Apps:

It’s a mockup but it would definitely be cool if they actually decided to build it. The mockup was not done by Panic. They have however (in my opinion successfully) experimented with productivity apps for iPad already in the form of Prompt. Who said iPad was only for consumption ?

Likeability

Shawn Blanc:

From what I have seen and read about the TouchPad and webOS so far, this may be the first likable tablet since the iPad. It’s buggy and has a poor app store like the rest of the other tablets. But what the TouchPad has that the others do not is likability. And that gives me hope that it could be great.

The Android tablet problem

It seems I’m not the only one taking all these Android tablet reviews with a huge grain of salt. Marco tears down Ars Technica’s review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

This, not how closely a manufacturer can mimic the iPad’s hardware, is what reviewers should be asking about each new tablet: Why would a significant number of buyers choose this instead of an iPad?

Or, more generally: What will cause enough people to buy this that developers will beat down the door to make great apps for it?

How to beat Apple

Jason Kottke wrote an interesting piece with in my opinion some solid advice for competitors on how to compete with Apple. His most interesting observation is this:

I can’t remember if this is my own theory or I read about this on Daring Fireball or something, but the Apple products & services that Apple does well are the ones that Steve Jobs uses (or cares about) and the ones he doesn’t use/care about are less good (or just plain bad). Jobs uses Keynote and it’s very good…but I’m pretty sure Jobs never has had to schedule his own appointments with iCal so that program is less good. Cloud apps and social apps are at the top of this list for a reason…I just don’t think Jobs cares about those things. I mean, he cares, but there’s not a lot of passion there…they aren’t a priority for him so he doesn’t really know how to think about them and attack those problems.

Looks like you’re going to have to buy a new one of those,” said an electrician as he passed by me on the way to his truck. “The new one’s coming out on the 11th.

Anti-Distraction Software

Shawn links to an interesting article by The Economist about Anti-Distraction Software. Shawn considers iPad OS or iOS as it’s called now to be the best Anti-Distraction Software.

But there is no doubt that when using my iPad (regardless of if it’s for work or leisure), I am significantly less prone to distraction or multitasking than when I am using my MacBook Pro.

I don’t have an iPad, since it’s not available in my country (The Netherlands) yet. However this is one of the reasons I’m so interested in getting one.

So these people seemed to think it was a good idea to spend $499 on an iPad only to destroy it minutes later. Thank god the US economy is saved ! people went back to reckless spending !
