Disruptive

Patrick Rhone:

Yesterdays news came as a big surprise to most if not all of us. Patrick Rhone summarizes it like this:

The iPad is causing such disruption in the PC business that HP, a company fundamental to the creation of the personal computer itself, is getting out of the PC business.

Who would have thought that would happen? Patrick also gives some solid advice:

Just like the iPad created a whole option, and thus, new market (the one you keep calling the “tablet market”), the only way to compete is not to get into that market but to create a whole new one. One that will suck the life out of the iPad market. Something so disruptive, so mind blowing, so magical that, like the iPad, people will form lines around the block for months to get it.

It’s a great post. You should read the whole thing.

'Apple in big trouble - can't survive'

I chuckled when I read this:

“Apple’s in big trouble. They’re sitting on piles of cash, but they are sitting on a closed system. In biology, in history, a closed system never survives”

Especially when he followed it up with this:

It is for this reason that he applauds Ford for adopting an open system with its MyFord Touch and SYNC Applink technologies.

Ford is definitely not in trouble.. Apple is.

I believe Paul Haddad described it best.

Google Sync: now with mail server search and appointment confirmation on iOS

Beginning today, users can finally perform mail server searches and confirm appointment requests from their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. This means that you’ll be able to search for messages in your entire mailbox, not just for emails stored on your device

About time! Now I can finally lower my “Mail Days to Sync” setting from “No Limit” to something more convenient like “1 Week”.

Infinity Blade earnings exceed $10 Million

Totally deserved success. I literally spent days on this game. With their recent addition of multiplayer in the form of “Arena Mode” they totally got me hooked and playing it all over again.

Want to take me on ? Add “GidoGeek” on Game Center.

edit: As of yesterday they also have a coveted Apple Design Award

I was wrong

Remember how just yesterday I told you about my recommended ritual before the yearly WWDC Keynote ?

Turns out I was wrong. The most expensive product announced during yesterday’s keynote was Mac OS X Lion. Which at only $ 29.99 is a real bargain.

Even if any of the products announced yesterday would have been more expensive the words “Available Today!” have not been ushered rendering my pre keynote ritual unnecessary.

⌚ Pre-WWDC keynote thoughts

It’s June again, which can mean only 2 things. Summer is approaching fast and Apple geeks are going out of their minds over an approximately 2 hour lasting speech of their favorite tech company at the WWDC. Which is an acronym for World Wide Drinking Contest, or at least so I was told. If they are lucky there will even ben an infamous One More Thing™ at the end of it. The expectations are always sky high and approach the levels of things such as world piece, hoverboards or even something as ludicrous as flash for iOS.

In order to maintain your sanity it’s usually advisable to avoid all blogs and news sites in the build-up to this event. In order to avoid the power of the Reality Distortion Field (and maintain your solvency) it’s also advisable stock up on necessary supplies and to either not watch the dreaded keynote address or to lock away all credit and or debit cards for at least 2 weeks in order for the effects of the RDF to wear off. For best results I recommend you do both.

Last year I only partially took my own advise and watched the keynote anyway. Even-though I locked away all forms of payment I ended up pre-ordering both a white and black iPhone 4 as-well as buying iMovie for iOS (I blame iTunes ease of purchase for that one). This year I couldn’t help myself either and followed all the blogs and predictions anyway therefor exposing myself to the traditional WWDC disappointment rage.

I am however immune to this post-keynote rage since this year the biggest disappointment for me is not attending.

The Heist sold over 500,000 Paid downloads in 1 week

Phill Ryu:

In just a little over 6.5 days, The Heist has racked up a staggering 501,813 sales at 99¢, totaling well over $300,000 in revenue. To put that in perspective, our last chart-topping app, Voices, managed to clear 300,000 sales… in its first month, meaning The Heist has been outselling it at a rate of nearly 8 fold! Makes us wonder if we outsold the entire paid Android marketplace this week

iWork for iPhone & iPod Touch

Apple just announced iWork for iPhone & iPod Touch. Best of al it’s a universal binary. So existing owners will be able to use it on iPhone and iPod Touch now to in addition to their iPads. Judging by the fact that WWDC is only days away, I’d say the only reason they announced this now is because there is no more time left during the keynote.

Earlier today Apple already confirmed Steve Jobs would be present and that the topics would be: iOS 5, Mac OSX Lion and they even confirmed they would talk about iCloud.
